Any TiVo experts out there?

I've been a TiVo user for about 13 or 14 years now. I started with a Series 1 that I hacked with an Ethernet/cache card and have moved up over the years as I find a deal on better units. About nine months ago I found a Premiere XL over at the Goodwill Outlet, and didn't hesitate to snap it up, especially since the price was only $3.

But now I have problems. I came home the other night and found it in a reboot loop, and after running the internal SMART test on the hard drive I have discovered that the drive is toast. I know it's not a simple matter of just popping in a new drive, and was wondering if anyone has experience getting these newer TiVo boxes up and running again.

Getting a hard drive is not a problem as I have a stack of the special AV drives recommended for DVR use (I buy misc. DVRs at the outlet for $3 and strip out the drives for other uses). I would probably downgrade from the failed 1TB drive to just a 500GB drive because, well, it's the largest AV drive I have available.

Does anyone know how to swap a failed drive for a working one in a later model TiVo?

Not even a clue - however, I have a TIVO Premiere that I would be willing to give away to any Oppo - Upper West Side of Manhattan. Upgraded to a Roamio earlier this year. Had far too many Dr. Who, Strike Back, and Law & Order UK episodes on deck, so I needed the space.

Too bad I'm in MO and not expecting to hit NY anytime soon...

I was thinking about upgrading to whatever that new TiVo is that was just released on Monday. Antenna only, which is just fine for me. And $50 seems like a great price, but I want to transfer my existing (discounted) service rather than paying $14.99/mo. and I don't know if I could buy it at $50 without signing a new service contract.
